Taking the doors off a modern Jeep Wrangler (JL) or Gladiator (JT) takes about 10 minutes each: disconnect the wiring, unhook the limiting strap, back out the two T50 Torx hinge bolts, and lift the door straight up off its pins. Here’s the full walkthrough, doors, top and windshield.
What you’ll need
The factory Jeep tool kit covers most of it. A ratchet with T40 and T50 Torx bits (the T50 size is stamped right on the hinge). Add a socket for the wiper bolts if you’ll fold the windshield, a towel to protect your paint, and a friend for the top. Doors-off mirror brackets are a smart buy, too, more on that below.
Removing the doors (front and rear)
- Lower the window and open the door.
- Slide off the plastic wiring cover in the door jamb, don’t pry it, or the tabs snap. Release the harness: lift the red lock tab, press the black tab, flip the white lever and pull it apart. Manual-window base trims may have little or no wiring here.
- Unhook the limiting (check) strap. On the JL and JT it doubles as the wiring loom, so slide its loop up and off the body-side hook.
- If your door has the secondary safety catch, remove its T40 Torx bolt just above the strap.
- With the T50 Torx bit, back out the two hinge bolts.
- Lift the door straight up off the pins and set it down padded and upright. The rear doors come off the same way.
Folding the windshield
On the JL this is optional, so many owners skip it. Remove the top first, take off the wiper arms, drop the sun visors, then undo the four T40 Torx bolts along the top of the windshield frame. Fold the glass forward onto the hood, strap it down, and thread the bolts back into their empty holes so none go missing.
Taking the top off
Freedom Top (hardtop): No tools for the front panels, drop the visors, unhook the two latches beneath them, twist the L-shaped locks open, and lift out the driver-side panel first, then the passenger side (about 12 lb each). For the full rear section, undo the T40 bolts, disconnect the rear wiper and washer lines, and grab a second person for the lift.
Soft top: For quick “Sunrider” open-air mode, drop the visors, pull the two header latches down off the windshield frame, fold the front section back over the rear bows, and secure the velcro straps. Full removal also unzips the windows and releases the bows.
Safety and the Alberta mirror note
Removing the doors is a feature Jeep engineered in, so it won’t disable your airbags, but keep these in mind:
- Mirrors (important): Alberta’s Vehicle Equipment Regulation (AR 122/2009) requires an interior mirror giving a clear view of the road behind, and a side mirror on each side if that view is obstructed. Your factory mirrors leave with the doors, so we recommend doors-off mirror brackets, at least on the driver’s side. Rules can change, so please confirm current regulations before you drive.
- Seatbelts stay mandatory, secure loose gear so nothing flies out, and expect the removed door’s mirror, speaker and locks to lose power (any chime clears when you reconnect).
Re-installing tips
Work in reverse: hang the door on its hinges, thread the T50 bolts snug (not overtightened), reconnect the harness until the lock tab clicks, re-seat the strap and any T40 catch bolt, then snap the wiring cover back on. A little grease on the hinge bolts helps next time. Test your windows, locks and mirrors before heading out.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it legal to drive a Jeep with the doors off in Alberta?
There’s no outright ban on driving doors-off in Alberta, but you must meet the mirror requirement in the Vehicle Equipment Regulation (AR 122/2009): a clear view of the road behind from an interior mirror, and a side mirror on each side if that view is obstructed. Because your factory mirrors come off with the doors, fit doors-off mirror brackets, and confirm current regulations before you drive.
Do I need a side mirror with the doors off?
Usually yes. With the doors and their mirrors gone, your interior mirror often can’t give a clear view behind, and Alberta then requires a side mirror on each side. A driver’s-side doors-off mirror bracket is the easiest fix.
What size Torx bit removes Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator door bolts?
A T50 Torx bit removes the two hinge bolts on each door. The size is stamped right on the hinge, and a T40 Torx bit removes the secondary safety-catch bolt. Both bits are in the factory Jeep tool kit.
Will taking the doors off set off warning lights?
Taking the doors off won’t disable your airbags. You may see a message or hear a chime because power to the door’s mirror, speaker and locks is disconnected; it clears once you reconnect the wiring and reinstall the doors.
Does removing the doors or top void my warranty?
No. The doors, windshield and top on a Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator are designed to come off, so removing them properly won’t void your factory warranty. Keep the hardware, avoid forcing anything, and reinstall carefully.
